Raveaux started, awaking, as a hand shook him by the shoulder. “What is it?”

“I’ve heard from Pim Wat.” Connor was backlit by flickering torchlight coming through an open doorway; it was still very early.

Raveaux tossed aside a light cotton blanket and sat up on the wooden platform with a pallet on it that he’d rested on in a dormitory-like room filled with other men. All of them were gone; he must have slept right through their quiet departures.

“What did she say?” Raveaux rubbed the bristle of beard growing on his chin, blinking to clear his eyes. He’d gone down hard.

“Pim Wat has my servants—my friends. Kupa and Nam.” Connor’s voice was a bleak rasp. “Come with me.”

He turned and headed for the door.

Raveaux fumbled for his clothes, pulling a long-sleeved tee on over his head. He’d enjoyed the baths last night; all that hot water had washed away the sweat of tension and travel. He zipped up his pants and slid bare feet into his shoes.

Nine lingered in the hall, but Connor was nowhere in sight by the time Raveaux made it to the door.

“The Master is much troubled,” Nine said, gesturing for Raveaux to follow. “He blames himself. His beloved servant Kupa has lost her ear.”

“Merde.” Raveaux broke into a trot behind the man as they moved down the stone hallway to a side door that stood ajar.

Connor stood in front of a large steel locker against one wall, contemplating a variety of guns and weaponry. “She has Nam and Kupa on Phi Ni. My private island.” He turned to face Raveaux, and his expressive eyes were the stark blue of an ice floe. “I miscalculated in letting them go home before Pim Wat was captured.”

Raveaux’s throat closed on any protestations; no response was adequate. “I see.”

“Pim Wat demands I come to her alone. I’ll take the chopper, and Nine will pilot me. I want you to reach out to Agent McDonald with the CIA. Go to Phi Ni with them by plane. By the time you get there, I will have Pim Wat in hand.”

Raveaux frowned. “That will definitely take a bit of time to arrange. You should stall.”

Connor held up his phone. “She will cut off a body part every hour that I delay my arrival.”

Raveaux approached, took the phone from Connor’s hand and looked at the photos Pim Wat had sent. He had never met Kupa, who clearly meant a lot to Connor, but the human misery in the photo turned his stomach. “That’s a powerful incentive to move fast, but if you don’t give us time to provide backup, she could prevail.”

“That’s what I told the Master,” Nine said. The Thai man’s stoic face gleamed with the sweat of stress. “I cannot let the Master endanger himself unnecessarily.”

“Then we will watch our friends lose their lives by the hour!” Connor bellowed. “I will not allow it. I am not some child to be coddled. I can take Pim Wat!”

“But Pim Wat has the advantage, and
